Don’t Call Me Mary

Don’t Call Me Mary (2013) is a photo book exploring the life and presence of my late Grandmother, Mary Rose Mott.

She had a quick wit, sharp opinions, and never hesitated to share either. She was fiercely independent, stubborn and intelligent. When I wanted to rile her up a bit I would call her Mary, instead of her preferred nickname, Rosie. As soon as her Christian name left my lips she would whip around in a huff and exclaim, “Don’t call me Mary! That’s what the Nuns used to call me!”

This book and the collection of images below serve as an exploration of the woman I knew and loved, as well the struggle she faced to maintain her independence in the face of old age and physical limitations.
